Bi- and Multifocal Intraocular Lenses

The present paper presents a review of multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) focusing on the optical principle used to create multifocality: refraction and diffraction. The principal optics of the different IOL designs in the market were discussed and compared. The main conclusion of this study states that diffractive bifocal optics seems to be superior to refractive designs which is well-substantiated by practical experience. In addition, a description of a novel bifocal design which combines the advantages of both refractive and diffractive optics is introduced in the paper. This lens, named Acri.LISA, appears to be the optimum choice for the correction of presbyopia with IOLs which is available at present.
